Television - A Thing Of The Past in the technological era?

Aug 22nd 2018

We live in an era where the go-to source of entertainment is the internet. With platforms such as Netflix and Twitch, people are slowly moving away from the television. So the question is, is television now a thing of the past?

Why television is becoming a thing of the past?

Netflix and Amazon:

With the arrival of Netflix and Amazon in the media world, TVs have been falling. These platforms are asserting their presence in the industry and sooner than later these platforms might overthrow televisions completely.

Digital Marketing:

TVs were essentially used by advertisers to display their content to their consumers, but current trends show that advertisers are quickly moving towards digital marketing and abandoning the conventional methods. Facebook is creating a huge base for advertising and has seen massive success in the past years, along with YouTube and other digital platforms. The only saving grace that television had was its backing by advertisers, but if those same advertisers are moving towards digital marketing as well, it doesn’t sound good for the future of television.

According to the New York Post, there was a decline of 10.6% fall in television viewers between the ages of 18 to 34. This is a clear indication that television is slowly dying out, but there is still hope for this dying media.

Why television might survive?

Television has been the primary source of entertainment for people of all age groups. It has been around for decades and even though it has seen a recent decline, it will take a lot more for this media to die out completely. There are a number of reasons for this, such as:

Advertisers:

Even though streaming is on a rise, it can never generate the same kind of business to advertisers that television does. Although, because of the growing trend in streaming, advertisers might shift their focus and TV might become obsolete in the future, but not in the near future.

Free downloads:

The younger generation believes that it is just easier to download what they want to watch. This means that these downloads will not be of any benefit to the advertisers. If the advertisers pull out from investing in these platforms, there is a slim chance that they will ever overtake television.

The motion picture industry:

The movie industry has been around for 120 years, so the question of whether this industry, along with all the profits that come along with it will disappear in the next 20 years is ridiculous. Media has a way of working and all that revenue cannot just disappear.

Television history:

For decades, television has been the primary source of entertainment for families. Television has been watched by people in all age groups and for a history like that to die out anytime in the near future is highly unlikely.

It may still be a while before we see the end of television as a media. Television has been around for a long time, but the recent growth in digital platforms have taken a huge chunk out of this conventional media. The day that digital will rule over all other Medias is not far and we need to be prepared for when that day comes. It will mark the end of an era that has lasted for several decades.
