Graphics and chassis: the two choices that constrain the rest
Graphics card
The GPU is the part most often changed after purchase and the part most constrained by the chassis: card length, slot width, the auxiliary power connectors the card needs and the headroom left in the power supply all have to line up. Check your application publisher's certified-hardware list first, then confirm the fit. Tower, rack or small form factor
Decide the chassis before the processor, because it sets the limits everything else has to live within. Towers give the most expansion and the easiest internal access; rack workstations suit shared machine rooms; small form factor saves desk space but restricts card length, slot width and power-supply headroom. Confirm the limits for the exact model in the applicable manufacturer document before ordering.
Specifications published for a platform describe what that platform supports, not the components fitted to any particular system. The configuration you receive is the one selected at checkout.

Choosing a refurbished workstation
Workstation model numbers track expansion capacity rather than speed, which is why a well-specified smaller machine often beats a poorly specified larger one. Three questions settle most purchases.
1. One processor or two?
This decides the memory ceiling and, on most families, the graphics capacity. It is also the most common source of disappointment on the used market: headline DIMM slot counts assume both processors are fitted, and most units arrive with one.

2. How many graphics cards?
Most tiers carry two graphics slots. Only the flagship tiers — Precision 7920 and HP Z8 G4 — carry four, with power supplies sized to match. If the work is GPU-bound, that is the decision.
3. Dell or HP?

Buying used: the question to ask first
Several platforms shipped on more than one mainboard, and a processor from one family will not fit another. The Dell Precision 5820 and HP Z4 G4 both shipped in Xeon W-21xx, Xeon W-22xx and Core X variants, so the unit you buy decides the upgrade path rather than the model name. Ask which board is fitted before ordering.
