ISR vs. ASR
Role and throughput decide the family — not raw port count.
Branch and edge routing with integrated switching, security and voice. Series: ISR 1000, ISR 4000. Best for branch offices, smaller sites and SD-WAN edge deployments.
Higher-throughput aggregation for the WAN edge and service-provider-style roles. Series: ASR 1000. Best for campus WAN edge and aggregating multiple branch links.
What Actually Decides the Model
Interface type and throughput headroom matter more than the model number on the label. Before comparing specific SKUs, nail down:
- WAN interface types — copper, fiber, cellular, or a mix, and how many of each.
- Throughput with encryption enabled — a router's rated throughput can drop substantially once VPN/IPsec encryption is turned on. Size for the encrypted number, not the headline figure.
- On-box services — VPN, SD-WAN, and firewalling all consume CPU and memory headroom; stacking several on one router changes the sizing math.
- Modules — WAN interface cards and service modules are often separate purchases, the same way uplink optics are separate from a switch.
Redundancy & software
Where a design calls for it, redundant power and dual-WAN failover are configuration and hardware questions we'll confirm against the exact SKU. TekBoost supplies the hardware only — Cisco software licenses and subscriptions are not included and must be obtained separately from Cisco or an authorized Cisco partner.
