RAM upgrades for Dell PowerEdge, HPE ProLiant, Dell Precision and HP Z
This TekBoost RAM upgrade guide explains memory options for refurbished and pre-owned business systems. The guide covers supported models from the Dell PowerEdge and HPE (formerly HP) ProLiant server families, along with Dell Precision and HP Z workstations.
Match the platform
Start with the exact server or workstation model. Slot count, accessible slots, memory generation, processor count, and supported module sizes can all change the layouts that are possible.
Respect the speed ceiling
A faster-rated DIMM may operate at the lower speed supported by the processor or platform. The advisor separates the module’s rating from its expected effective speed so you can avoid paying for an unusable speed advantage.
Plan capacity and headroom
Compare adding matching memory with replacing the installed set. Each candidate shows final capacity, slots used, remaining slots, and estimated price so today’s upgrade does not quietly block tomorrow’s expansion.

RAM upgrade questions
How do I find compatible RAM for my server or workstation?
Select the exact system model, processor or supported RAM speed, desired capacity, and upgrade approach. The advisor then compares candidates against the recorded platform, socket, slot, memory-type, speed, and catalogue constraints.
Can I add RAM to the memory already installed?
Yes, when a compatible exact-capacity layout is available. Enter the installed module count, capacity, type, speed, rank, and chip organization. If the current DIMMs cannot reach the goal, the advisor explains why and recommends an appropriate replacement layout.
Does faster-rated RAM make the system run faster?
Not necessarily. Memory normally runs at the effective speed supported by the processor and system configuration. The advisor flags faster-rated options that would provide no additional operating-speed benefit.
Will the memory carry Dell or HPE part numbers?
Standard fulfillment uses major-brand memory from Samsung, SK hynix, or Micron. Dell- or HPE-branded labels and exact manufacturer part numbers are not guaranteed. If you need a specific manufacturer part number, request a custom quote.
Are the prices shown final, and is the memory in stock?
Prices are current catalogue figures rather than stock promises. Availability and final compatibility are confirmed before fulfillment, and final compatibility still requires the approved model-specific population rules.
Memory supplied by specification

When a higher RAM rating adds cost without a higher speed ceiling
The Xeon Silver 4110 supports DDR4-2400. Installing faster-rated memory does not remove that processor limit. See Intel's processor specification.
On September 25, 2026, the RAM Advisor showed these catalog candidates for an R740 with one Silver 4110 and a 64GB replacement-memory target:
| Candidate | Module rating | Advisor speed ceiling | Estimated total |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 × 16GB ECC | 2400 MT/s | 2400 MT/s | $460 |
| 4 × 16GB ECC | 2666 MT/s | 2400 MT/s | $596 |
The observed difference was $136, with no increase in the stated speed ceiling. Both candidates require exact DIMM and population-rule review; these are not approved installation recipes. Equal speed ceilings do not establish identical timings or measured application performance.
Catalog prices are not stock promises. A higher-rated module may still make sense for a verified future upgrade, availability or another specification. Compare capacity, supported placement and expansion needs before choosing. Use the advisor above with your actual system details, or request configuration help.
