Choosing between HP Z models
Pick the chassis before the processor. The chassis fixes what the rest of the configuration can be: the length of expansion cards it accepts, the power-supply headroom available for a graphics card, the memory slots the board exposes, and the drive bays you can populate. A smaller tower saves desk space but restricts card length, slot width and power-supply headroom; a larger chassis gives more expansion room and easier internal access.
Decide the chassis and processor together rather than starting from memory, because the processor determines how many memory channels are available and the maximum memory speed the platform supports.
Specifications published for a platform describe what that platform supports, not the components fitted to any particular system. Confirm the limits for the exact model in the applicable HP QuickSpecs document before ordering. The configuration you receive is the one selected at checkout.
If the model you need is not configurable online, request a quote and we will confirm availability and specification. Earlier Z-series towers are handled the same way — see the HP Z840 platform reference for the dual-socket generation that preceded the Z8 G4. You can also compare the wider range on the refurbished workstations page or see Dell Precision workstations.
Compare HP Z workstation models
The number in a Z name tracks expansion capacity rather than speed. These guides set out sockets, DIMM slots, graphics slots and PCIe positions for each tier, drawn from HP published specifications.

Dell against HP, tier by tier
TekBoost sells both ranges, so these comparisons are written across brands rather than within one. Each sets out where the two platforms match and the few specifications that actually separate them.
