A note on processor generations within 13G, 14G, and 16G: 13G spans both the E5-2600 v3 and v4 processor families — which specific family a given model supports depends on the model and, in some cases, the exact configuration ordered; see the model tables below rather than assuming one family for the whole generation. Within 14G, Dell's own R640 Technical Guide lists supported processors as "1st and 2nd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable" (its Table 5), while the R440 and R740 documents cited in this guide state 2nd Generation only for those specific models — do not assume every 14G model supports 1st Gen. Similarly, several 16G models (R660xs, R760xs, R760, T560) support both 4th-Generation and 5th-Generation Xeon Scalable processors, with different core counts and memory speeds for each — 16G is not a single-processor-generation platform.

R660xs and R760xs are the storage-optimized/balanced-compute variants of their respective platforms — this document does not make a claim about the base R660 or R760xa/R750xa GPU-oriented variants, which were not independently sourced this cycle.

RAID vs. HBA — decision framing

This is general decision guidance, not a claim that every model above supports every controller listed elsewhere in this document — check the model tables above for what's confirmed per platform.

  • RAID controllers (the Dell PERC family, internal or external — e.g. the R430's external PERC H830, which Dell classifies as a hardware RAID controller supporting RAID 0/1/5/6/10/50/60, not an HBA [1][16]) suit hardware-managed redundancy — the traditional pattern for a hypervisor like VMware ESXi installed to redundant local storage.
  • HBA controllers suit software-defined-storage stacks that expect direct disk access — ZFS-based systems (e.g., TrueNAS) or Ceph are the common examples.
  • Confirmed HBA options in the sourced documents above include the R640-era internal HBA330 [6], the T550-era HBA345/HBA355i [10], and the DDR5-generation HBA355i/HBA355e/HBA465i family across 15G/16G platforms [8][9][11][13][14].

Virtualization and storage-platform fit

Official vendor support. Dell publishes a certified-server list for VMware vSphere 8.0. As of this review, that list directly confirms the following models covered in this guide: R440, R450, R640, R740, R750, R660xs, R760, R760xs, T550, and T560 — along with T440 and several 15G models (R550, R650) not otherwise detailed above [15]. R430, R630, and R730 do not appear in Dell's current vSphere 8.0 certified-server list. This reflects the current certification list only — check Dell's live KB and the VMware Compatibility Guide directly for your exact model, firmware, controller, CPU, and hypervisor version before deploying, since certification lists change over time. Proxmox VE. Dell's published operating-system/hypervisor support documentation is the authority for official support claims. Based on the sources reviewed for this guide, no formal, PowerEdge-wide Proxmox VE certification was found. That is a statement about the evidence available, not a confirmed claim that Dell has ruled out Proxmox support entirely — a more definitive Dell statement was not located this review cycle. Community forum discussions describe running Proxmox VE on a range of PowerEdge models; that is usage evidence from users, not vendor certification, and should be treated accordingly when planning a production deployment.

TrueNAS / Unraid. No official vendor compatibility statement or substantive community evidence was reviewed for either platform against the specific models in this guide. This guide does not make a compatibility claim for either.

  1. Need official VMware certification for a specific vSphere version? Confirm your exact model, firmware, controller, and CPU directly against Dell's current KB and the VMware Compatibility Guide [15] before purchasing — certification lists change over time.
  2. Running Proxmox? Treat compatibility as community-reported usage rather than formal Dell PowerEdge-wide certification, and verify your specific hardware configuration against current community documentation. Running TrueNAS or Unraid? This guide did not evaluate either platform — verify compatibility independently before relying on it; do not treat the Proxmox note above as covering these platforms too.
  3. Need PCIe Gen4 or Gen5 expansion? 15G platforms offer PCIe Gen4; 16G platforms offer Gen4 and, on several models, Gen5 — see the model tables above for which slots on which model.
  4. Need DDR5 memory? That's a 16G-only feature among the generations in this guide — 13G/14G/15G are all DDR4.
  5. Choosing between two models in the same generation? Compare the exact DIMM slot count, memory speed, and PCIe slot configuration in the tables above — these vary meaningfully within a generation, not just between generations.

Frequently asked questions

What's the real difference between Dell PowerEdge generations? Primarily the processor family, the memory generation and speed ceiling, and the PCIe generation available for expansion cards — see the model tables above for the confirmed figures per platform.

Is 16G a single processor generation? No. Several 16G models in this guide (R660xs, R760xs, R760, T560) support both 4th-Generation and 5th-Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors, with different maximum core counts and memory speeds for each.

Can I run Proxmox on a PowerEdge server? See the virtualization section above — no formal PowerEdge-wide Dell certification for Proxmox VE was found in the sources reviewed for this guide, though community users report running it on various models. Verify your exact hardware before relying on that for production use.

Methodology and Sources

Every model specification in this guide was checked against a model-specific Dell technical document. When a source did not clearly state a field, the guide omits it instead of transferring a specification from a related model. Processor-generation labels use Dell's published terminology. Intel codenames are intentionally omitted because an Intel-primary reference was not directly available during this review.
