Processors	Up to two supported Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 or v4 processors. The hosted specification sheet covers v4 options; confirm the exact CPU and firmware requirements for your system.
Memory	24 DDR4 DIMM slots; this edition lists up to 3 TB and 2400 MT/s. These are platform ceilings, not a promise for every installed CPU or DIMM set.

Is a refurbished Dell PowerEdge R730 still worth buying?

That depends on the workload rather than the model’s age. The R730 is a 2U dual-socket platform, and the figures on this page — up to two Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 or v4 processors and 24 DDR4 DIMM slots — are platform capabilities, not a description of the components fitted to any particular system. What a system actually contains is set by the configuration you order. Platforms of this generation still suit virtualisation hosts, file and application servers, backup targets and lab or test environments, where core count and memory capacity matter more than the newest instruction set. Where you need the newest processor generation or faster interconnects, a later platform is the better fit. What is the difference between the R730 and the R730xd?

They are separate models and are configured separately. Four things decide whether a configuration will work. First, the processor: the installed CPU count affects how much memory and expansion you can use, and the hosted specification sheet covers a subset of options, so confirm the exact CPU and firmware requirements for your system. Second, memory: confirm DIMM type, the slots already populated and the population rules for your CPU count. Third, storage: drive size, backplane, controller and carriers have to match one another, not just the drive you want. Fourth, the physical build: power supplies, rails and bezel.
