Platform specifications

These are platform capabilities and documented options. Match the exact processor, chassis and installed components to the applicable manufacturer document.

Processors Up to two supported Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 or v4 processors. The hosted 2015 sheet covers v3 options; later configurations have different supported limits.
Memory 24 DDR4 DIMM slots. This early edition lists 768 GB and 2133 MT/s; do not apply those figures as universal limits for later configurations.
Storage The sheet includes layouts with up to 26 × 2.5-inch drives or up to 16 × 3.5-inch plus two 2.5-inch drives. These are specific chassis combinations, not add-on bays available in every server.
Controllers Listed internal options include PERC H330, H730 and H730P.
Expansion Up to six PCIe 3.0 slots plus a dedicated RAID card slot in the supplied sheet. Check riser and CPU requirements.
Management and power iDRAC8; redundant hot-plug PSU options. Verify the system configuration rather than using wattage alone.

Plan a complete configuration

Processor & memory

Match your application requirements to the supported processor family. Verify DIMM type, occupied slots and population rules; installed CPU count can affect available memory and expansion.

Storage & expansion

Confirm drive size, backplane, controller, carriers and cables. Check risers, PCIe slot availability and network requirements before selecting upgrades.

Condition & delivery

Compare the complete configured price, warranty terms and lead time. Include your quantity, destination and preferred condition when requesting a quote.

Common questions

Can I configure and buy this model online?

Yes. Use Configure & Buy to open the current CTO listing and choose its available options. Contact us for requirements outside that listing.

Does the specification sheet describe my exact system?

No. It describes platform options for its document edition. Check your installed processor, memory, chassis, controller, power supply and expansion components before selecting parts.

R730xd or R740xd — which should I choose?

Both are 2U dual-socket, high-density storage rack servers built for capacity-focused storage, virtualization and backup workloads. The core difference is generation and platform. The R730xd is Dell’s 13th Generation PowerEdge platform, documented here for Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3/v4 processors, 24 DDR4 DIMM slots and iDRAC8. The R740xd is the 14th Generation platform, documented for Intel Xeon Scalable processors, the same 24 DIMM slots with higher memory bandwidth headroom, and iDRAC9. Choose the R730xd for proven, cost-effective storage capacity at the lowest acquisition cost; choose the R740xd for newer processor support and up to eight PCIe Gen 3 expansion slots. See the full R730xd vs R740xd comparison for a detailed side-by-side. All figures are platform capabilities from the manufacturer sheet — confirm them against the chassis and backplane in the configuration you are quoted.
