Choosing between Precision models
Start with the chassis. It sets the ceiling for everything else: the length and width of graphics card the system accepts, the power-supply headroom available for that card, the memory slots the board exposes, and the drive bays you can fill. A rack Precision suits a shared machine room, a tower gives the most expansion and the easiest internal access, and a small form factor saves desk space at the cost of card length and power headroom.
Choose the chassis and processor together rather than starting from memory, because the processor determines how many memory channels are available and the maximum memory speed the platform supports.
Specifications published for a platform describe what that platform supports, not the components fitted to any particular system. Confirm the limits for the exact model against the applicable Dell documentation before ordering. The configuration you receive is the one selected at checkout.
